Each year the School awards several prizes to students who achieve academic excellence.

School Funding Opportunities

The Law School also offers a range of different funding opportunities and awards to help current students and recent graduates with travel for development activities, further study and hardship circumstances.

For travel

Gill Hollis Tercentenary Awards For Travel

Award information: Two awards of £1250

Eligibility

Open to:
  • final year Law LLB Honours students,
  • final year Law LLB Graduate Entry students who are currently enrolled on further programmes of taught study at Edinburgh.
  • PhD students in Law in their first three years of full-time study (or, if part-time, the first four years)

Application process

Applications must include:
  • When you plan to travel, the location and details of the proposed trip. If you are applying for a summer school, course or similar activity, please include a relevant URL.
  • An indication of how the activity would build both on previous interests and towards future professional plans.
  • The total costs of the activity and the amount being requested. Please include details here of any other sources of funding that are secured or are being sought.
  • Confirmation of acceptance if the activity involves training and/or enrolment (An email confirming your booking and acceptance is sufficient).
  • The name and contact details of a referee e.g. a Personal Tutor, Course Organiser or employer.
Awards will be disbursed subsequent to the meeting of the Board of Examiners at which the successful applicant’s degree is approved.  Should the planned project not actually take place, the Award will be refunded by the Award holder, via the School, to the endowment. Recipients of awards will be asked to submit a short update on how the scholarship has benefited them which may be shared with donors or used on the Law School website.

The Ewan Cameron Travel Bursaries

Scholarship information: Edinburgh Law School will award up to 10 bursaries of £1000 to be used to support travel and subsistence for individual development activities which may include Summer Schools or further study.

Eligibility

All LLB (Hons), Graduate LLB students, MSc and LLM students.

Application Process

To apply please send an email to law@ed.ac.uk containing the following information: Details of the proposed activity for which the travel bursary is required, including;
  • When you plan to travel, the location and details of the proposed trip. If you are applying for a summer school, course or similar activity, please include a relevant URL.
  • An indication of how the activity would build both on your previous interests and towards your future professional plans.
  • The total costs of the travel needed to undertake this activity. Please include details here of any other sources of funding that are secured or are being sought.
  • Confirmation of acceptance if the activity involves training and/or enrolment (An email confirming your booking and acceptance is sufficient).
  • The name and contact details of a referee (i.e. a Personal Tutor, course organiser or employer)
The scholarship awardee will be expected to submit a brief report in writing to the School after the completion of the chosen activity.
For further study

Dalgety Scholarship

A scholarship, to the value of £1000, is awarded to a student who is completing their degree course and who undertakes to proceed to postgraduate research or advanced study approved by Edinburgh Law School. Deadline for applications is 25 November 2022. Application forms are available from Law School reception or by contacting law@ed.ac.uk Recipients of awards will be asked to submit a short update on how the scholarship has benefited them which may be shared with donors or used on the Law School website.

Vans Dunlop Scholarship

One award to the maximum value of £1000 is awarded to a student who has passed, within three years immediately prior to the date of the award the last exams necessary for graduation in Law. The holder must pursue a course of advanced study in law approved by the School during his or her tenure, and must not undertake any other employment or course of study except with the consent of the School. must not undertake any other employment or course of study except with the consent of the School. Lorimer Scholarship in International Law

A scholarship, to the value of £500 - two years immediately before the award is made applicants must have successfully completed an examination in one of the following subjects for any degree in the University:
  • International Law
  • International Organisations Law and Practice
  • International Economic Law and Organisations
  • International Economic Organisations
  • EU Law
  • European Institutions
  • International Private Law
Preference will be given to candidates for a degree in Law and the Diploma is excluded from the award. Deadline for applications is 25 November 2022. For hardship

Margaret Malloch Scholarships

Scholarship Information: One scholarship of £1,750 may be awarded based on financial need.Eligibility: These awards are available for any first year student on the Graduate LLB degree programme at Edinburgh Law School, going into their 2nd year of study. Applicants must not be in receipt of a full Education Authority Award or other similar means of financial support (e.g. the Carnegie Trust, University Hardship Bursary). For academic excellence

Margaret Malloch Scholarships

Scholarship Information: One scholarship of £1,750 will be awarded to the applicant who has the best academic record in the subjects they have taken during their first year of the Graduate LLB.Eligibility: These awards are available for any 1st year student on the Graduate LLB degree programme at Edinburgh, going into their 2nd year of study. Applicants must not be in receipt of a full Education Authority Award or other similar means of financial support (e.g. the Carnegie Trust, University Hardship Bursary).Deadline: 25 November 2022 Application Process:Application forms can be requested from law@ed.ac.uk.
