There are a number of different positions available, such as Content Editor, Finance Officer, Publications Officer, Chief Copy Editor and Copy Editors, so there really is a role to suit everyone. Joining the ESLR is a great way to gain sought-after transferable skills which will be useful for any legal or academic career.

LawTech – Special Interest Group, part of the Edinburgh CompSoc

LawTech is a Special Interest Group which is part of the Edinburgh CompSoc. It was started by a group of law students in 2018 interested in the current crossovers between technology and law. This year, we will have our first event on the 2nd of October, see the Facebook event for some more information on location etc.

LawTech has a wide scope, looking at anything and everything where law and technology intersect. We look at many things, for example:

  • What is really done with the data collected online?
  • How can cybersecurity and cybercrime impact (and be impacted by) the law?
  • Can computer programs be copyrighted?
  • What are the difficulties around cryptocurrency?
  • And much more!

There is NO requirement to have any significant understanding of technology or law. LawTech aims to create a forum of discussion, to learn from others, bring your own knowledge and develop opinions to create more discourse around technology and law.

If you are interested in these type of questions, and in becoming more involved with LawTech please like our Facebook page @LawTechUoE to keep up to date with what we are doing. Please feel free to contact us via the page for any more information.

The Letter of the Law – a complimentary news briefing to the University of Edinburgh’s students

The Letter of the Law – a complimentary news briefing to the University of Edinburgh’s students

It is a 7 day-a-week early morning newsletter that curates and makes sense of the news and developments in the legal sector.  It is enjoyed by legal professionals across the UK and Europe, from the Magic Circle firms to provincial high street solicitors. It has been established nearly a decade and continues to grow in popularity.

A recurring feedback from our readers is that they would have found this a valuable tool while they were studying; for that reason we have decided to make it free for all students and educators.

https://www.scotbarny.org/

I am writing to you on behalf of the Scottish Bar Association of New York, which is making its debut appearance at the Edinburgh University School of Law’s Careers Fair on September 25th. We are looking for two Student Ambassadors to volunteer for the day, and would highly appreciate the below message being circulated among the law school student body:

We have a diverse community of over 300 professionals, many of whom are available to offer insights and mentorship to those who are considering qualification to practice or pursue further study in the United States.

We are seeking two volunteer Student Ambassadors to represent our Association at the School of Law’s careers fair on September 25th. We will brief both Student Ambassadors on our background, what resources we offer to students at Scottish law schools, and what we are looking to build for the future.

In return for assisting us, each Student Ambassador will have an online spotlight article, outlining their background and career ambitions, distributed among our network. Please email a brief statement (no more than 150 words) outlining your background and career ambitions to: info@scotbarny.org

Please visit our website at www.scotbarny.org to access resources on applying and studying for the New York Bar exam, applying for J.D./LL.M. programs at U.S. law schools, and how to navigate the U.S. legal job market.”

Edinburgh Nightline Volunteering Opportunity

Are you able to listen but not judge?

Can you give information but not advice?

Can you spare a few nights every term to support your fellow students?

If you answered yes, we need you!

Edinburgh Nightline is now recruiting student listening volunteers.

Who are we?

We are a student run organisation in Edinburgh for students. Every night of term, student volunteers answer calls and instant messages from their fellow university students about anything that’s troubling them. Nightline offers a safe place to talk.

Why are we recruiting?

Our organisation relies on our listening volunteers to take confidential, anonymous calls. Our volunteers are from all walks of life, subject areas, academic institutions and of all ages. No experience is required – just enthusiasm for our cause. We ask that volunteers attend training based around other organisations such as Samaritans.

If you would like to apply you can find out more information at www.ednightline.com/volunteering/listening-volunteer/.

We are holding Pre-Training events next week at the following time:

24th and 27th September, 6.30pm – 8.00pm in 50 George Square, Room G.06

These events are designed to introduce you to the work that Nightline does, and to our application and training process. It is also a chance for you to meet some volunteers, who will be happy to answer any questions you may have. It is essential to attend one of these meetings if you wish to submit an application.

If you have any questions you can contact training@ednightline.com – we look forward to hearing from you!
