Programme Representative Recruitment for Semester Two

Hello,

I hope this message finds you well, and having had a restful Winter break!

This email provides details of the Programme Representative recruitment and registration process for Semester Two of the 2022/23 academic year.

Please note, we are only registering the following Representatives at this point:

  • Course Representatives (also sometimes referred to as Class Representatives) for courses running in Semester Two of the 2022/23 academic year (as far as we are aware, only the Schools still operating a Course Representative system are Chemistry, the Edinburgh Futures Institute, and Law)
  • Programme Representatives for programmes beginning in Semester Two of the 2022/23 academic year (as far as we are aware, there are only a small number of Postgraduate programmes or cohorts which begin in Semester Two)
We are not registering Programme Representatives for programmes which began in Semester One of the 2022/23 academic year. If your School is not operating a Course Representative system and you do not have any Programmes which start in Semster Two, then please disregard this email.

A reminder that Programme Representatives are students who have been elected or selected to gather feedback from their peers and communicate this to relevant staff within their Programme, Department and School, both directly throughout the semester, and at Student Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC) meetings. You can find out more about the Programme Representative role here.

Recruitment

A reminder that, for taught programmes – both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Taught – we recommend recruiting at least one Programme Representative per year of a programme, with larger programmes recruiting multiple Programme Representatives per year, at a ratio of one Programme Representative to every 40 students. At the Postgraduate Research level, Programme Representatives should be recruited, but may represent a research project, research centre, or department.

All eligible students should have the opportunity to volunteer as a Programme Representative, and the selection or election process should be fair and transparent. More guidance on recruiting Programme Representatives can be found here. When advertising the opportunity, you can signpost students to this news article which outlines the remit and benefit of the Programme Representative role.

Registration

Once Programme Representatives have been recruited, their details must be shared with us so that we can begin their induction and training. This can be done by completing the template attached, ensuring you follow the instructions highlighted in yellow, and returning it to us via email at this address. The deadline for Programme Representative registration this year is the end of Week 2 (EOD on 27 January)Programme Representatives registered after this point may be unable to access training or recognition for their role.

Once your Programme Representatives have been registered, we will contact them via email to welcome them to their role, and invite them to complete their training, which this year will comprise of an asynchronous self-study module, followed by a live, online training session. Programme Representatives must complete both parts of their training by the end of Week 6 (EOD on 24 February). We will also add them to our Student Voice Online Hub on MS Teams, where they will have the opportunity to connect with other student representatives in their School and across the University.

Support

We will contact Programme Representatives throughout the semester regarding additional opportunities, including our calendar of personal and professional development workshops, and our reward and recognition schemes (including the nationally accredited Saltire Award for volunteering). However, you should ensure that you are communicating with them regarding opportunities within their School, and details of upcoming Student Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC) meetings.

If you or your Programme Representatives encounter any challenges during the year the Students’ Association’s Student Voice Team is here to help, and you can contact us at studentvoice@eusa.ed.ac.uk or by dropping into the Student Voice Hub in Potterrow. Programme Representatives can also contact us by posting in the Student Voice Online Hub on MS Teams.

We have three guides on the Programme Representative system which you can find at the links below:

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Law Society of Scotland Street Law Programme

Law Society of Scotland Street Law Programme – Last few places on training weekend for LLB law students! (13th – 15th January)

Street Law is a way for the Law Society of Scotland to provide legal education in schools, in a format that pupils can really connect with. It’s designed to be engaging and get people talking through themes like street crime and human rights. We aim to get all pupils thinking about the law, by raising aspirations and encouraging skills to be used like critical thinking. More information about the programme can be found here: Street Law | Law Society of Scotland (lawscot.org.uk)

As well as an educational programme, it’s also a highly-successful volunteer scheme for LLB students. Our Street Lawyers are all law students studying in Scotland based near local schools. Street Law gives you an amazing opportunity to build confidence, gain presentation skills and deliver our lessons in a real classroom. If you are interested in the programme and want to teach lessons in schools, we are looking to fill our last few places on our training weekend in January!

The classes use the pupils’ inherent interest in law and their own experiences, to develop high-level cognitive, literacy and interpersonal skills. We rely on our Street Law trainers (student volunteers) to put on these classes and we work in blocks of 4 – 6 weeks where we put on one hour lesson per week. The total number of hour of commitment per week is 3-4 hours which take into account preparation and travel to school lessons. During summer/Christmas we put on one off events online and in our partnered schools. We wish all our Street Law trainers to put on these blocks of lessons over each semester and therefore commitment to the schools and programme is vital.

We have our training session in Edinburgh on the 13th – 15th of January. If you are interested, please email GeorgiaTurnbull@lawscot.org.uk, as places are limited. The training weekend will teach you some of the necessary skills to teach our programme of lessons and learn about the methodology of Street law. The training weekend is compulsory for all our trainers to compete in.

Law Commission’s 2023 Research Assistant Recruitment

Dear Students,

I am getting in touch as the recruitment for Law Commission’s 2023 Research Assistant campaign is now live. The Law Commission is the statutory independent body created to keep the law of England and Wales under review and to recommend reform where it is needed. Each year we recruit up to 18 Research Assistants to help us with our work ensuring the law is simple, fair and modern.

Joining us as a Research Assistant is a fantastic opportunity to master complex areas of law and help shape legal reform in England and Wales, whilst working side by side with the Commissioners. Our Research Assistants develop a range of skills and gain professional experience that is hard to obtain anywhere else.

The role is fixed-term for 51 weeks from September 2023, with the possibility of renewal for a further year upon application.

You may find the below posters (in English and Welsh) and our 2023 Guide for Applicants useful for advertising. The deadline for applications this year is 31 January 2023.

Full details of the role, eligibility criteria, and the application process can be found in our Guide for Applicants. Further materials, such as a ‘top tips’ document, CV template and a sample interview video are available on our website to help candidates perform well during the recruitment process.

If you have any questions about outreach, please do not hesitate to contact us. If your students have any queries about the role or the application process not answered by our guide, please ask them to contact us at recruitment@lawcommission.gov.uk.
