Ordinary course selection and enrolment
Students in Years 1 and 2 of the LLB programmes will take Ordinary courses (Level 08). Some courses are compulsory for the award of the LLB and may not possible to graduate without a pass in those courses. Some courses are required for entry to the legal progression, either as a solicitor (required by the Law Society of Scotland) or as an advocate (required by the Faculty of Advocates).
Students will be automatically enrolled on courses which are compulsory as part of their degree programme. There may also be some optional course choices available as part of your programme. You should visit your Degree Programme Table to confirm the structure of your programme and the courses you will study in each year.
In June, the Undergraduate Office will contact students entering Year 2 in 2024-25 with information on how to nominate your preferred elective courses for the following year. Please monitor your student email account over the summer period and please complete the optional course survey by the specified deadline.

The Undergraduate Office will provide these students with further information on the pathway for each programme, and how to nominate your preference.

Honours Course Selection
In June, the Undergraduate Office will email all students entering Year 3 or 4 in 2024-25 with further information on the Honours Course Selection process. You will receive a Honours Guidance and Prospectus document, as well as a link to a survey where you will be asked to submit your preferred course choices. Please monitor your student email account over the summer period and please ensure you complete the optional course survey by the deadline.
How are Law course spaces allocated?
Spaces are allocated based on academic merit (credit weighted average) up to the maximum course capacity. The exact number of spaces in individual courses will be specified in the Honours Guidance and Prospectus which will be emailed to students by the Undergraduate Office.
Your credit weighted average is the average of your course results. This is calculated slightly differently depending on the year of study you’re entering. Further information on how to calculate your credit weighted average, including examples, will be provided in the Honours Guidance and Prospectus.
Selecting courses for courses outside of Law (Joint Honours students only).
Students on Joint Honours programmes should submit their course choices in line with the process for the relevant School. For more information on course enrolment processes for other Schools, please visit the CAHSS Course Enrolment webpage or contact the School office directly.
I don’t wish to progress to Honours and intend to study the Ordinary degree, what should I do?
Students who intend to follow the Ordinary degree programme should contact the Student Support Office confirming their plans. Students on the Ordinary degree must apply for two Honours courses.
