Induction
Welcome to the Law School
Welcome to the 2024/25 academic year. We are delighted to welcome you as a new postgraduate student at Edinburgh Law School and we hope you find your studies stimulating, rewarding and enjoyable!
As a new student to the School, there is a lot of advice and guidance available to help you settle in and make the most of your studies. We have included some of the most relevant advice for you below.
Induction & Welcome period
Online students have a two-week induction period prior to teaching commencing. During the induction period, you will have access to the introductory areas of your allocated courses and pre-course materials as well as a community hub. During the induction period please use this opportunity to familiarise yourselves with our online learning environment Learn, and work through the key information and activities.
You will also be invited to a number of live induction events to confirm your attendance as a key part of matriculation to the University, meet your classmates and learn more about what to expect from your programme of study. Please check the schedule of live events and do join in if you can.
Getting Started
In addition to the induction materials, we would encourage you to complete two preparatory law ‘Legal Research Skills’ and ‘The UK Legal Systems and the Western Legal Tradition’ self-study modules available on Learn so that you are familiar with legal concepts and research methods before teaching starts. This is particularly important if you do not have a legal background or are returning to legal study after a substantial period of time.
Advice and Guidance for New Students
The University ‘New Students’ Website has lots of advice and guidance about commencing your studies at Edinburgh, and we recommend you spend some time familiarising yourself with the information available on the New Students website.
