The role:

We have a vacancy for a Legal Trainee to join the firm in September 2023. The two-year traineeship is split into two or three seats. In year one, the trainee will normally be assigned to the Rural & Commercial Property Group and the Executry Group. The third seat is usually spent within Asset Protection, where there will be a wide range of work. In addition to estate planning, and other private client work such as trusts, taxation, wills and powers of attorney, there may be some opportunity to undertake work that has aspects of financial planning within it. Legal Summer Placement with The General Teaching Council for Scotland

Two-month fixed term contract – remote working

Salary – £1,521 per month (£3,042 in total). Salaries are paid monthly on the 25th of the month.

About GTC Scotland

GTC Scotland is a statutory regulatory body and a registered charity. It is governed by the Public Services Reform (General Teaching Council for Scotland) Order 2011 (the Order). GTC Scotland’s statutory role includes the registration and regulation of teachers in Scotland.

GTC Scotland has a small legal team, which forms part of the wider Regulation and Legal Services team. The team includes the Director of Regulation and Legal Services, Legal Adviser and Information Compliance Officer. The wider team includes three Regulation Solicitors and six Regulation Officers.

The role of the legal team is to ensure GTC Scotland acts within the bounds of its statutory functions, ensures compliance with all other legislative requirements (for instance in relation to data protection, freedom of information and information management), to manage litigation and to provide cross organisational legal advice and support.

About the Legal Summer Placement

GTC Scotland is seeking to appoint a student currently studying Scots Law to support the functions of the GTC Scotland legal team, as well as to provide the successful candidate with valuable skills gained from working within its busy in-house legal team.

The successful candidate will work directly with the GTC Scotland Legal Adviser. They would support the Legal Adviser in providing advice to various areas of the organisation, attending meetings with external legal advisers and/or internal clients, preparing papers for GTC Scotland’s committees and/or Council, undertaking legal and other research and assisting with the development of key projects, as well as assisting and supporting the Information Compliance Officer and wider Regulation team as required.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience within a small legal team and develop key skills essential for a future legal career.

The role would be by way of remote working, as all GTC Scotland employees currently work from home in line with Covid-19 restrictions. Depending on easing of Covid-19 restrictions the role may be fulfilled both remotely and in the GTCS Edinburgh office or entirely by remote working.

Key roles and responsibilities

GTC Scotland is looking for an enthusiastic Scots law student who is keen to get involved in the day to day work of the GTC Scotland legal team and taking on independent research and project work to assist and enhance the development of the team’s work.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and research skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Attention to detail; and
  • Ability to look for solutions, think strategically and bring new ideas on how to best develop process, policy and practices at GTC Scotland.

Your key roles and responsibilities will be to:

  • Assist the GTC Scotland Legal Adviser in various legal matters arising;
  • Assist the GTC Scotland Information Compliance Officer with Freedom of Information, Data Protection and Information Management tasks;
  • Take on research and development tasks to assist GTC Scotland’s legal team, as well as the wider organisation, in developing policy, practice and learning within the organisation;
  • Develop a working knowledge of GTC Scotland’s legislative framework;
  • Develop a working knowledge of GTC Scotland’s registration and regulation framework.

Final Year Student Opportunity for The Times Final Year Student Survey

Do you want to have your say about Coronavirus and the impact that it has had on your job hunting experiences? Do you want to take on a flexible, temporary role that allows you to work from home?

If yes, then this is the job for you! High Fliers Research, in association with The Times, is currently recruiting a team of Interviewers to conduct our survey, The Times Final Year Student Survey 2021. This paid, part-time position will be a great addition to your CV, and will provide invaluable first hand marketing experience, whilst also developing key skill areas. Our survey takes place online and so all you need to do is recruit 25 friends to take part.

The survey is conducted annually at 30 leading UK universities in order to gain first hand information on students’ experiences and attitudes towards the graduate job market and their aspirations before graduation. In February 2020, interviewers helped ensure that over 19,000 students took part in The Times Final Year Student Survey!

The role involves interviewing final year students over the course of fourteen days. Each group interview session will allow interviewees to work through the questions online whilst you monitor their progress using Zoom or Skype. Interviewees only need to give 20 minutes of their time and will be entered into a cash prize draw as well as be able to select a charity for High Fliers Research to donate to on their behalf. We are aiming to raise over £20,000 for our charities.

Legal Assistant Posts at the Scottish Law Commission

The Scottish Law Commission was set up under the Law Commissions Act 1965 for the purpose of promoting the reform of the law of Scotland.

 

We are currently seeking a small number of law graduates for fixed-term appointments of one year, to work as legal assistants on our current and planned law reform projects. Appointments will start at the end of August 2021.

 

Allocations of work to legal assistants may vary, depending on the Commission’s priorities and on any new projects referred to the Commission. The work allocation to legal assistants may relate to the following areas of the law:

 

· Heritable securities;

· Aspects of leases;

· Homicide;

· Aspects of family law;

· Damages for personal injury;

· Surrogacy, a joint law reform project with the Law Commission of England and Wales;

· Automated vehicles, also a joint law reform project.

 

The salary will be £26,155 per annum.

 

Applications are invited from those who can demonstrate that they have achieved very high academic standards in Scots law, and that they have excellent research skills and experience. The minimum criteria for applying is that an applicant must have obtained or expect to obtain by summer 2021 a First or Upper Second Class Honours Degree in Scots Law or any other similar academic qualification which provides evidence of relevant knowledge and understanding of Scots law. Applications from other suitably qualified candidates who have relevant experience may exceptionally be considered.
