MacRoberts Insight event for Law Students

MacRoberts is one of Scotland’s oldest and best-known law firms. As a Scottish SME law firm, we predominantly focus on Scotland, and this accounts for the overwhelming majority of our work. We have offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh and we make a significant contribution to the Scottish economy and to the development of a skilled and diverse workforce.

Our Insight Event has been designed for university students who are interested in pursuing a career in law to find out more about MacRoberts. Students will learn about the work we do, our different practice groups and the teams they could join if they choose to embark on a career with us.

This interactive, virtual event will allow law students to hear from MacRoberts employees about their roles and the different opportunities available across our firm. This event will also provide practical guidance on making applications for summer placements and traineeships, as well as some useful interview hints and tips.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask relevant questions of our speakers in a Q&A session.

The event is free and sign-up details can be found here: Insight Event | MacRoberts

Law Society of Scotland Street Law Programme

Law Society of Scotland Street Law Programme – Last few places on training weekend for LLB law students! (13th – 15th January)

Street Law is a way for the Law Society of Scotland to provide legal education in schools, in a format that pupils can really connect with. It’s designed to be engaging and get people talking through themes like street crime and human rights. We aim to get all pupils thinking about the law, by raising aspirations and encouraging skills to be used like critical thinking. More information about the programme can be found here: Street Law | Law Society of Scotland (lawscot.org.uk)

As well as an educational programme, it’s also a highly-successful volunteer scheme for LLB students. Our Street Lawyers are all law students studying in Scotland based near local schools. Street Law gives you an amazing opportunity to build confidence, gain presentation skills and deliver our lessons in a real classroom. If you are interested in the programme and want to teach lessons in schools, we are looking to fill our last few places on our training weekend in January!

The classes use the pupils’ inherent interest in law and their own experiences, to develop high-level cognitive, literacy and interpersonal skills. We rely on our Street Law trainers (student volunteers) to put on these classes and we work in blocks of 4 – 6 weeks where we put on one hour lesson per week. The total number of hour of commitment per week is 3-4 hours which take into account preparation and travel to school lessons. During summer/Christmas we put on one off events online and in our partnered schools. We wish all our Street Law trainers to put on these blocks of lessons over each semester and therefore commitment to the schools and programme is vital.

We have our training session in Edinburgh on the 13th – 15th of January. If you are interested, please email GeorgiaTurnbull@lawscot.org.uk, as places are limited. The training weekend will teach you some of the necessary skills to teach our programme of lessons and learn about the methodology of Street law. The training weekend is compulsory for all our trainers to compete in.

Cambridge International Law Journal 2023 Conference – Call for Papers

12TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL
LAW JOURNAL (CILJ)

LANGUAGE IN INTERNATIONAL LAW

(In-person, Faculty of Law of the University of Cambridge, 24–25 April 2023)

CALL FOR PAPERS

Language is essential to international law. International law terms and phrases are
regularly invoked to specific ends, extending their operation beyond legal rules to a
form of discourse: states initiate military operations using the justifications of
‘genocide’ prevention, ‘humanitarian’ aid, and the ‘responsibility to protect’; claim
‘discrimination’ in trade; and operationalise the language of ‘sovereignty’ to avoid
obligations. While the multilingual translation and interpretation of legal texts is
essential to the practice of law, exact semantic transposition of concepts is unattainable,
and undermines both participation in, and the efficacy of, international law. Language
itself is pertinent to the expression of identity and can render groups vulnerable to
discrimination and exclusion from the public sphere. Big data has become a new
language in international law, heavily relied on in international efforts to prevent crime,
and as a basis for regulation. Altogether, language remains the unacknowledged core of
international law, relevant not only to treaty interpretation but to the understanding of
the discipline and its components as a whole.

The Conference Convenors and Editors of the Cambridge International Law Journal
(CILJ) welcome submissions for the 12th Annual Cambridge International Law
Conference, which will be hosted in person at the Faculty of Law of the University
of Cambridge from 24 to 25 April 2023. Submissions may be on any area of public or
private international law, and should raise issues relevant to the theme Language in
International Law. Papers potentially may address, for example, any of the following
indicative themes:

● The cooptation of language to achieve legal ends;
● Interpretative methods in international law;
● Global access to international law;
● International legal discourses and the role of the international lawyer;
● Language, identity, discrimination and the protection of minorities; and
● Big data and global governance.

SUBMISSION

An abstract of no more than 500 words, together with a CV, should be submitted via the
following link by 11:59pm GMT, 20 January 2022:
https://cambridgejournalofinternatlandcomplaw.submittable.com/submit.

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their proposals in February 2023. The
authors of selected papers will be required to submit a 4,000-word extended abstract to
conference@cilj.co.uk by 20 April 2023.

Authors who present at the Conference may also be invited to submit their papers for
consideration for Volume 12(2) of CILJ, the dedicated conference issue of the Journal,
to be published in December 2023.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Registration for the Conference will open in February 2023. Further information will be
posted on the CILJ website in due course. In the interim, please contact
