REGISTER NOW! – HRLA Careers Week: Monday 18 – Saturday 23 October 2021

The best careers event of the year for budding human rights lawyers is back – and it’s bigger than ever before! This year, the careers event will span a whole week and will be held online via Zoom, so that as many people as possible can attend.

The event is aimed primarily at university students, recent graduates and those just starting out on a career in human rights law. Our sessions will address pathways to a career in human rights law, accessibility and diversity in the profession and current topical issues, including lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, how to be a campaigning human rights lawyer and working in a profession under threat.

The event will launch with a keynote speech from Adam Wagner on Monday 18 October 2021 (7pm), which will cover his own pathway to a career in human rights law, some of his ground-breaking work during the COVID-19 pandemic and his tips for aspiring human rights lawyers. Like all of our sessions, Adam’s speech will be followed by a Q&A session.

The UK Centre for Animal Law is pleased to announce that the Cecilia Moot Competition will be running for the third year (2021-2022)

This moot is centered on the fascinating topic of animal law, an area of increasing importance. It provides candidates with the opportunity to exercise, in a challenging environment their advocacy and legal skills as well as their creative mindset, in arguing on what can be unprecedented points of law. Candidates will delve into the legal and ethical arguments surrounding animal law.

Survey Participants Needed – £200 Amazon Voucher Prize Draw

I am looking for University students to complete an online survey, investigating health-related behaviours (including drinking and eating behaviours) at three points across a 12-month period. Each survey will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.

Respondents will be entered into a prize draw with the chance to win up to £200 worth of Amazon vouchers.

To take part, respondents must:

· Be aged 18 or above.

· Be a current student at a UK University (either undergraduate or postgraduate).

· Be a consumer of alcohol (any level of alcohol consumption greater than none is fine).

· Not be currently taking medication which may alter appetite.

DESCRIPTION: Do you want to take a more analytical approach? This workshop will introduce methods and tools to help you read and write critically and draw conclusions.

TITLE: Referencing – and how to do it

DESCRIPTION: Most students know that they need to ‘reference’ in their academic work using a particular style. You may even have to use different systems for different courses. But what is it? How do you do it? And when do you do it? This workshop is for students who are unfamiliar with or would like a reminder about referencing.

TITLE: Time Management
DATE AND TIME: 13th October 2021 (13:30 – 15:00)
DESCRIPTION: This workshop will help you identify your own ‘time sponges’, look at how you can prioritise tasks and suggest practical ways you can schedule what you need to do.

TITLE: Dealing with Volume
DATE AND TIME: 13th October 2021 (15:30 – 17:00)
DESCRIPTION: Feeling stretched or overwhelmed? Studying in your own time is an important part of being a successful student but coping with a high volume of reading and work can be challenging. This workshop will focus on what research tells us about studying effectively, effective and practical ways to use your notes and lecture slides, reading effectively and critically, managing your time and the effectiveness of different study patterns and strategies you can use to enhance understanding and for revision.

TITLE: Getting Started with Essay Writing
DATE AND TIME: 13th October 2021 (17:15 – 18:45)
DESCRIPTION: This workshop is a general introduction to essay writing at university. It is for students who are new to university or who would like to rethink their approach to essay assignments.

TITLE: Citing sources and creating bibliographies with Endnote

DESCRIPTION: This session is open to all students who would like to get help or advice for using Endnote to keep a database of literature sources and create reference lists easily in essays and other written work.
