Meadows Marathon 2022

On Sunday the 6th of March Edinburgh’s biggest charity marathon is back! Meadows Marathon 2022 is set to take place in person after a successful virtual event in 2021 and we hope to make this our biggest event yet.

Meadows Marathon is an annual student-organised event held in The Meadows in Edinburgh to raise money for local, national and international charities. The event is organised by Edinburgh RAG, an initiative of Edinburgh Students’ Charities Appeal (ESCA), in partnership with Edinburgh Napier Events Society and has raised over £237,000 for charity since its inception in 2007!

Whether you run, walk, jog or use a wheelchair, there is something for everyone! We offer 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, Full Marathon and Relay race options 🏃‍♀️

This year we will be raising money for our three chosen charities; Health in Mind, The Rock Trust and Mercy in Action as well as the option to pick your own charity!

We are also reintroducing the option to run as a team, a perfect opportunity to bring colleagues together and boost staff wellbeing for a shared and worthy cause! Sign up as a group of 2-9 runners on this link https://race-nation.co.uk/register/meadows-marathon/meadows-marathon-2022?fbclid=IwAR0aLbAzAT9TtuWLG-_MnydwwtFTVkFCqzwCErKp0VW03MCc4JPNnAGj7ok

Join us at the Cumberland Lodge Moot Court – Regina vs. Billy Goat I

Cumberland Lodge, in Windsor Great Park, is holding a fundraising moot court in memory of Sir John Laws. The moot court takes place at 6pm on Monday 28 February. We would appreciate it if you could forward this email and share widely.

We bring together barristers, judges, law students, Friends of Cumberland Lodge, and members of the public, in person or online – all are welcome to attend. The event takes place in memory of Sir John, who had a distinguished legal and academic career, and served as a Visitor at Cumberland Lodge from 2003 until his death in 2020. All funds raised will support our charitable work with young people.

This event is set in our Court of Appeal, where one of the Billy Goats Gruff is appealing against his conviction for manslaughter following an unfortunate encounter with a troll…

We are delighted to be joined by our Court of Appeal:

·       Her Honour Judge Anuja Dhir QC

·       The Rt Hon Lady Justice Whipple

·       The Rt Hon Sir David Bean

Our mooting barristers include:

·       Kirsty Brimelow QC

·       Simon Myerson QC

·       Two representatives from Big Voice London, the social mobility charity supporting students from non-fee-paying schools to explore the UK legal system.

If you are unfamiliar with mooting, a moot court simulates a court hearing in which participants analyse a fictional problem (in this case, our adapted tale of the Billy Goats Gruff!), research the relevant law, prepare written submissions, and present oral arguments. It has been part of the process of training lawyers for centuries and plays an important role in legal education.

In-person tickets are £100 and include a three-course dinner in one of our historic dining rooms. We are also offering the opportunity to stay overnight at our former royal residence in the heart of the Great Park. Tickets that include an overnight stay and breakfast are available at £225 for a single room, and £400 for two people (twin and double rooms available).

Online tickets are £10 per person if you would prefer to enjoy the moot from the comfort of your own home.

You can buy your tickets here.

Are you a Changemaker? The 1001 Think Tank needs YOU

The Butterfly Baby Clinic is led by a team of Clinical and Developmental Psychologists within the Centre for Applied Developmental Psychology at the University of Edinburgh. In response to the pandemic, we launched the 1001 Think Tank to co-produce parent-infant mental health resources for families living in low- and middle-income countries and/or affected by humanitarian crises.

With the support of a Student Experience Grant we are collaborating on our first 1001 Think Tank project with Ububele, an organisation supporting families in South Africa, featured in the short 1001 Days Movie.

We are inviting students from across the University to join us as Changemakers in this project from February-July 2022. Students will work alongside UK professional Changemakers in the field of perinatal and infant mental health to co-produce parent-infant mental health resources with Ububele’s staff and the parents they support. Interested student Changemakers do not need any prior knowledge of mental health as we will be working in multi-disciplinary teams. So whether you’re a budding writer, artist, musician, blue-sky thinker or anything in between, we need you on our team. The time commitment will be 1-2 hours per week, which includes attending fortnightly 1 hour team meetings and working on tasks between meetings.

We are hosting an online information session from 15:00-15:30 GMT on 4th February to talk about the project and answer any questions. To register your interest in joining the project, please complete the online sign-up form to receive a Teams link. We will be recording the session and will send a copy of the session to anyone who signs up but cannot attend on the day. If you would like to contact us about anything before then our email is: butterfly@ed.ac.uk

We look forward to welcoming you to our team.
