Pine’s Eye | Opening Celebration Tonight | Talbot Rice Gallery

Dear all,

The Talbot Rice Gallery is delighted to invite you to the opening of Pine’s Eye tonight, Friday 28th February from 6-8pm.

Pine’s Eye explores what it means to be human in times of ecological change. Taking its name from ‘Pinocchio’ (the Italian for ‘pine eye’ or ‘kernel’) it is necessarily tricky and mischievous as it weaves a journey between subjectivities entangled in the natural world. Through masks, mannequins and magic, Pine’s Eye offers alternative perspectives for how we understand ourselves in the face of environmental crisis. Curated by James Clegg, including contemporary artists from both indigenous groups and the international artworld it features: Firelei Báez, Beau Dick, Laurent Grasso, Alan Hunt, Torsten Lauschmann, Ana Mendieta, Kevin Mooney, Beatriz Santiago Muñoz, Taryn Simon, Cole Speck, Johanna Unzueta, Lois Weinberger, Haegue Yang.

The exhibition will run through until 9th May 2020 so if you are unable to attend the opening night, we hope to see you at the Talbot Rice Gallery on another occasion soon.

Girl Up Edinburgh – Panel: Reporting Sexual Violence at University

Join Girl Up Edinburgh for a panel discussion on Reporting Sexual Violence at University on Monday the 27th of January at 7pm in the MacLaren Stuart Room, Old College.

We are bringing together university management, Students Association representatives and academics working in this field to explain the current reporting frameworks in place at the University of Edinburgh and how they can be improved.

In the UK, an estimated 1 in 12 students will experience a form of sexual violence while at university and only 6% will report that violence to their institutions. This panel will consider why there is a lack of confidence in university reporting procedures and what improvements can be made to better support survivors and prevent incidences of sexual violence occurring in the first place.

This is a free event and everyone is welcome.

Nightline Pre-Training Recruitment

Are you able to listen but not judge?

Can you give information but not advice?

Can you spare a few nights every term to support your fellow students?

If you answered yes, we need you!

Edinburgh Nightline is now recruiting student listening volunteers.

Who are we?

We are a student run organisation in Edinburgh for students. Every night of term, student volunteers answer calls and instant messages from their fellow university students about anything that’s troubling them. Nightline offers a safe place to talk.

Why are we recruiting?

Our organisation relies on our listening volunteers to take confidential, anonymous calls. Our volunteers are from all walks of life, subject areas, academic institutions and of all ages. No experience is required – just enthusiasm for our cause. We ask that volunteers attend training based around other organisations such as Samaritans.

If you would like to apply you can find out more information at www.ednightline.com/volunteering/listening-volunteer/.

We are holding a Pre-Training event this week at the following time:

24th January, 6.30pm – 8.00pm in Appleton Tower, Lecture Theatre 2

These events are designed to introduce you to the work that Nightline does, and to our application and training process. It is also a chance for you to meet some volunteers, who will be happy to answer any questions you may have. It is essential to attend one of these meetings if you wish to submit an application.

If you have any questions you can contact training@ednightline.com – we look forward to hearing from you!
