Streetlaw workshop Friday 20th September from 1pm till 5pm

Streetlaw workshop to be delivered by eminent Professor David McQuoid- Mason, founder of Streetlaw in South Africa.

Friday 20th September from 1pm till 5pm

Outreach Centre Lecture Theatre, 9C Holyrood Road.

Streetlaw is a student-project, which aims to share legal information with people in local communities through the use of interactive presentations. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their legal research and presentation skills, interact with members of the community and work directly with legal practitioners. If you would like more information about Streetlaw and how it has developed, please visit https://www.streetlaw.org/who-we-are

The workshop will be delivered by Professor David McQuoid-Mason, founder of the South African Streetlaw Programme and Professor of Law at University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban. Professor McQuoid-Mason is a regular visitor to Scotland and delivered his workshop at the Scottish University Law Clinic Network (SULCN) conference at the University of Edinburgh in 2014 and again in 2015 and 2018.

The students who attend this workshop will be instrumental in developing Edinburgh Law School’s Streetlaw initiative.

All students and staff are welcome to attend.

There is no limit on numbers, but to ensure sufficient materials are available, please reserve a place by emailing: freelegaladvice@ed.ac.uk

Mooting Society Announcement

Welcome (or welcome back) from the Mooting Society!

Mooting is, in essence, arguing fictional cases. Our internal competitions are open to everyone, and are a great way to improve your legal research and public speaking skills. They are judged by practicing solicitors and advocates, so participating is also an excellent networking opportunity. There are cash prizes from corporate sponsors, and some great social events.

We’d love for you to get involved, and we’re hosting a Model Moot and Advocacy Skills evening on September 26th at 6pm in Appleton Lecture Theatre A for you to come see what we’re all about. In addition to a mooting demonstration, Paul Reid, Advocate at Ampersand Stable, former Edinburgh Law Lecturer and Mooting Competition Winner, will be delivering a talk on how to win your case and impress a judge. There will be an opportunity to join the society and have a few drinks with us on the evening!

Event details can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/events/645047835903894/

Please feel free to contact us on facebook or at mooting.edinburgh@gmail.com for more information.

Mens Law Football Team

Are you currently studying law and interested in playing football at a high level?

Then why not come trial for the Law football team?

All ages are welcome! Should you be a first year, fourth year, or on your masters/P.H.D.

Please don’t be shy and come along

We are a long established team currently in a BUCS (British university and colleges sport) league playing competitively against other universities across Scotland.

Games will be played on a Wednesday afternoon at Peffermill (if scheduled to play at home).

If scheduled to play away then fixtures will also be on a Wednesday but often slightly later so as to allow us extra time for travelling to other universities.

All fixtures will be played out-with your timetable to avoid clashing with academic commitments.

Not only do we provide ample opportunity to play football, but also an opportunity for socialising with other people on your course. Should it be attending the Law Ball together or just heading out for a few drinks to watch the football we consider ourselves an open and accommodating group of friends which we would be more than happy for you to join.

Joining the team may also help you with your studies, as mentioned our players range from first year to P.H.D, meaning someone in our squad will have undertook and experienced the courses you are currently sitting. I can personally say for myself that being part of this team has allowed me to better understand my course and university processes.

If you are at all interested, Trials will be held on Wednesday the 18th of September, 2-4pm at Peffermill (Pitch 3G1). We have a changing room from 1:45pm so please get down early to be on the pitch for 2pm.

If you plan on attending or have any queries/questions please contact either of the Captains through the below information.

We’ve had students from a huge variety of degrees hired onto this graduate scheme in the past – they specifically look for students from arts, humanities, STEM and masters/PhD backgrounds!

Who is the company?

– Our client is a long established, partner-run and hugely successful Investment Management firm based in the heart of Edinburgh.

– The company has over 100 years of experience and assets under management exceeding £100bn.

– Their approach to research, their determination to always look to the long term and their culture drives their success.

– For them, it’s not about looking for graduates from a particular degree – instead, they look for inquisitive thinkers with an alternative view on things, who have the vision to see what the future could look like.

What is the role?

– As a graduate trainee, 80% of your time is spent researching.

– You will be collecting information to create your own unique viewpoint, helping you to spot investment opportunities.

– Identifying and understanding the evolution of corporate culture as well as industry and societal trends will require creativity and skill.

– The ability to explore politics, socio-economic conditions and current affairs is crucial and, whilst it can be challenging, it is also incredibly intellectually rewarding.

– Within the first few months you will work with people from all levels of the business, from previous graduates, all the way up to partners in the firm.

– Excellent written and communication skills are key as you will regularly write up your findings and present them to your team.

Why should you apply?

– The firm is truly leading in its field and employs only the very best minds.

– It has a collegiate, friendly company culture with extensive support and training, including for the IMC/CFA qualifications.

– There are lots of opportunities for career progression with almost all partners having started at the company as graduates.

– You’ll be working in the very heart of Edinburgh within beautiful, modern offices.

Who is best suited to this role?

– An outstanding academic track record is crucial, including being on track to receive at least a 2:1 in ANY degree subject.

Arts, humanities, STEM and postgraduate (masters or PhD) students are particularly encouraged to apply.

– This industry leader needs independent thinkers who are open-mindedly curious, interesting, enthusiastic, and questioning.

– They are seeking resilient individuals to whom research comes naturally. You must be able to cope with uncertainty.

– They are looking for brains and analytics, rather than financial experience or knowledge, so excellent candidates from any academic discipline should apply.
