Welcome Week Event: Reckoning with Reparations

Join Law School alumni, staff, new and current students to listen to the discussion between distinguished Law School alumni Professor Eric Miller, Loyola Law School, and Professor Lesley McAra CBE FRSE, Edinburgh Law School. This will be a chance to listen to policing and criminal law specialists, speak with alumni, and meet current staff and students. The lecture will be held in the iconic Playfair Library, followed by a drinks reception.
The lecture will be on the topic of ‘Reckoning with Reparations’, and will be a discussion on why reparations is such a powerful idea both globally but also nationally and locally, and why it resonates here in Scotland.
Professor Eric Miller (LLB, 1991), Co-Director of Loyola Anti-Racism Center, is a policing and criminal law specialist who has been very active in debates about reparations for slavery and for the 1921 Tulsa Race Riots. Professor Lesley McAra (MA Politics, 1981), Co-Director of The Edinburgh Study of Youth Transitions and Crime, is a policing expert and the School’s Chair of Penology. Professor McAra is the former Dean of Edinburgh Law School, the first woman to be appointed to the post.
Reparations has become a major means of demanding redress, advanced by different groups identified by race, nationality, and even sexual orientation. There are a variety of different ways of understanding the nature of reparations, and the political movements that use reparations to advance their objectives.
