The Edinburgh Student Law Review (ESLR) is seeking new applicants for various roles for the academic year 2021-2022. The ESLR was originally published in 2009 and was the first journal of its kind in Scotland. It is now produced annually, and is managed and written by students, giving a forum for law students to engage with current legal issues and debates. The roles within the ESLR offers an excellent opportunity for students within the Law School at the University of Edinburgh to broaden their experience, develop their skills, and take part in an exciting project and tradition of the Law School. Job Descriptions

We are recruiting externally for the following roles. Please read the role descriptions carefully before applying. The work of the ESLR begins in November, with a particularly busy period from February to April. In addition to the roles described below, we will also be recruiting Content Editors at a later date.

Publications Officers (1-2)
Publications Officers maintain and generate engaging content for the ESLR’s social media
presence (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn) and website.
Publications Officers Managers must have good social media skills and would ideally have
experience in promoting organisations on a digital platform. A good Publications Officer
should have experience engaging with diverse online audiences.
Reporting directly to the Editors-in-Chief.
Considered for ESLR Board Position upon application.

Finance Officers (1-2)
Finance Officers are responsible for maintaining the ESLR’s finances. They also source new
sponsorship for the ESLR and maintain positive ongoing relationships with our existing
sponsors.
Finance Officers must have good numeracy and communication skills. Ideally, they would
have experience in supervising financial accounts (for example as a society treasurer) or in
managing sponsorship for other organisations.
Reporting directly to the Editors-in-Chief.
Considered for ESLR Board Position upon application.

(Digital) Events Officer (1)
The Events Officer organises social events for the ESLR. They are also responsible for more
formal events such as the annual publication launch and skills training events for prospective
authors.
The Events Officer should have good communication and team-working skills. They should
have experience in managing events. The Events Officer should also be able to show initiative
in conceiving and planning events.
Reporting directly to the Editors-in-Chief.
Considered for ESLR Board Position upon application.

Copy Editors (~ 15)
The Copy Editors edit articles for publication in accordance with the style of the ESLR, as
well as ensure said articles are free of grammatical issues, etcetera. Copy Editors generally
edit two articles a year.
Content Editors should have strong language skills and be able to assess an article for its
consistency with the House Style. Content Editors should have good time management skills and must be able to complete work to a deadline.
Reporting to the Chief Copy Editors.

Blog Editors (1-2)
The Blog Editor edits blog posts for grammar, style, etcetera. They liaise with authors and the Managing Editors to produce the ESLR Blog. The Blog aims to post bi-weekly from
November of each academic year.
The Blog Editor should have strong language skills and experience with editing work for a
digital platform. The Blog Editor should have good time management skills and must be able to complete work to a deadline.

It is possible to apply for more than one position. The deadline for applications to all positions is 5pm on Monday 25 October 2021.
Please note this is a voluntary position with no financial compensation but the experience gained will be valuable for your future legal career.

Essential Criteria
Applicants must satisfy all of the following criteria:
• Be matriculated as a student in the Law School at the University of Edinburgh for academic year 2021-2022 (either part-time or full-time);
• Have excellent IT and organisational skills;
• Have advanced communication skills, both written and oral;
• Be able to work as part of a team whilst keeping to timescales.

Desirable Criteria
In addition to the Essential Criteria at section C above, it is desirable if applicants have previous experience that has prepared them for the role to which they apply. For example, this may relate to:
• Having previous experience as a member of the ESLR board;
• Having previous experience editing, reviewing or producing an academic or professional
publication;
• Relevant extracurricular activities relating to their undergraduate or postgraduate study within the Law School at the University of Edinburgh.
