Research Opportunity at the Edinburgh International Justice Initiative (EIJI)

Semester 2 Academic Year 2020/21

The EIJI is recruiting! We are offering the opportunity for university students, regardless of degree, year, and background, to conduct and take part in a legal research project in the field of international law, in collaboration with professional institutions and organisations. If you are passionate about international justice and want to gain invaluable legal research skills, then we hope you apply for a position as an EIJI Legal Researcher.

Role: Legal Researcher

Duration: January 11th, 2021 – April 25th, 2021

Who We Are?

The Edinburgh International Justice Initiative (EIJI) is a student-run initiative that seeks to work with, and in support of, institutions focused on international criminal law, international human rights law, and international humanitarian law. We passionately provide pro-bono legal research assistance focused on strengthening the international justice system, as we ultimately look to make a practical and meaningful difference. In the past, we have worked with the ICC Defence Counsel, a Cameroon based organization, and various human rights organisations and Government legal agencies in Venezuela and Nepal.

The Position

Successful applicants will be placed into a small research team (4-6 individuals) led by an EIJI student Research Coordinator. Each team will work with an experienced supervisor over the course of semester 2 as they undertake in-depth legal research on topics and issues prescribed by our client. All of our research work is generally focused on international criminal law, international human rights law, or other topics related to international justice. Please note that for reasons of confidentiality, we cannot divulge the nature of the project you will be working on until you are on the team.

As a Legal Researcher, you will learn about the research process, how to structure reports, get to know jurisprudence from international courts, and experience the intricacies of working in a small research team. This is also a great opportunity to interact with experienced professionals from a variety of fields of expertise across the globe.

Applications will be released on November 16th, 2020 and will close on November 30th, 2020. Following applications, you may be invited to interview.
