Legal and Group Governance Services Summer Placements 2020

About Baillie Gifford

Baillie Gifford was established as an investment management partnership over 100 years ago. Today, with over 1,200 people based in Edinburgh, and more than 700 clients across the globe, we’re an independent investment management business with over £200 billion under management.

We do much more than just buy shares in companies. We think about a company’s potential to grow significantly in the next five to ten years, which is often influenced by many diverse and conflicting factors. Our work is a million miles from the stereotype of investors who track markets looking for short-term gains. Instead, we focus on developing a deep understanding of the underlying drivers behind potential investments. That means questioning everything that happens around us, and anticipating the consequences of local and global events.

Opportunities for law students

We offer summer placement opportunities in both Legal and Group Governance Services and each placement lasts between 8 to 12 weeks. You’ll receive tailored training and support, as well as a comprehensive induction and access to our learning and development courses. In addition, you’ll receive an introductory talk from a member of each team within the department. You’ll then be able to record all the achievements and skills you’ve gained in your learning journal.

Legal Summer Placement

The team

The Legal department’s role is to assist the wider business by identifying and managing legal and regulatory risks. Our activities focus on contract negotiation and facilitating investment management agreements to support segregated business, together with dispute resolution, data protection compliance and pooled funds work such as product development/analysis, product governance and company secretarial services.

The role

During your placement you’ll be seen as a real member of the team, working on contract management and live projects that are relevant to our business. You’ll gain an overview of how things work across our various teams and be able to make a valuable contribution to the day-to-day running of the Legal department. Hands-on tasks might include maintaining and applying departmental precedent documents and checklists and supporting qualified lawyers by undertaking research into legal developments. You’ll also get the chance to assist with the implementation of various projects and participate in meetings.

If you’re inquisitive, responsible, enthusiastic, eager to learn and work well in a team, then we’d love to explore this opportunity at Baillie Gifford with you. You’ll need to be self-sufficient, have an eye for the fine detail and be happy to take on your own work. A good knowledge of Microsoft applications is also beneficial, and you must be studying towards, or holding, a law degree.

Group Governance Services Summer Placement

The team

Group Governance Services (GGS) provides services to support Baillie Gifford’s internal self-governance ambitions. They provide robust, responsive and efficient support to the subsidiary boards, governance committees and key stakeholders across all geographies. They take into account the benefits, opportunities, challenges and risks arising from our unlimited liability partnership.

The role

The role involves working with Group Governance Services on a variety of tasks, which you can complete within your placement with us. These include analysing data, organising and minuting meetings, data cleansing activities, the creation of business-process flowcharts and assisting with secretarial duties.

If you are an enthusiastic and results-driven person with a keen eye for detail and customer focus, then we’d love to explore this opportunity at Baillie Gifford with you. The department needs someone with great communication skills, who can prioritise their own workload and work with minimal supervision.
